There are many archaeological sites near Antalya.
The region of Antalya is well known for this. And Perge and Aspendos are two of the best known and better preserved examples of Roman architecture. If you have one full day for this, you can easily visit both of these places. If you are traveling on a budget, or you enjoy doing everything at your own pace, you can visit both Perge and Aspendos from Antalya all on your own.
Here’s how you can do it.
Perge and Aspendos From Antalya
You can also find a private taxi driver, or you can do it all on your own. If you want to do it all on your own, here’s my plan for you — this is the way we did it May 2021.
1. Antalya – Perge by Tram
Perge is the biggest of the two.
It’s also the easiest to get to. That’s why we’ll go there first. There is a tram going all the way from the Antalya old town to Perge. You need to get off at Aksu. The stop is about about a mile / 1.6 km away from Perge.
TRAM: 3.5 TL
ENTRANCE: 50 TL
2. Perge – Serik by Bus
There is a local bus going from Antalya to Serik.
Bus stop is on the same road where is the tram stop.
Ask people to point you to the right spot.
BUS: 9 TL
3. Serik – Aspendos – Serik by Taxi
They say there are also hourly buses going to Aspendos.
But we couldn’t find one, and we didn’t want to waste our time, so we opted for a taxi. In May 2021 there was a national lockdown in Turkey, hence both of these places were totally empty. Not to get stranded in Aspendos we agreed that our driver will wait and take us also back to Serik.
TAXI (total): 200 TL
ENTRANCE: 50 TL
4. Serik – Antalya by Bus
Our taxi driver let us out on the side of the road.
He said that’s where a bus going to Antalya will stop, and so it did some 10 minutes later. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t have found this spot on our own.
BUS: 12 TL
TOTAL (2 PERSONS): 7 + 100 + 18 + 300 + 24 = 449 TL
Perge Ancient City, Antalya
This place is both big and impressive.
Not surprisingly it’s the top archeological site in Antalya.
For me it’s also a great place for walking near Antalya. You can easily spend hours walking around. If you know that you are that kind of person who loves places like this, take that into account and come as early as possible. Because you still want to visit Aspendos, and it’s some 2 hours away.
There is a trail going to the top of the hill next to this ancient city. Here is what you see from above.
While Perge is closer to Antalya, Aspendos theater is bigger.
For many Aspendos theater is the main stop in Aspendos, and I can see why. For me, personally, it was the most impressive part of this whole Antalya day trip experience. I’m not sure if I would feel the same with thousands of tourists around us, but being there all on our own was magical. Another thing I was really surprised about was the great state these sites are in. It’s really enjoyable to be there.
As all of this was right before an even bigger lockdown in Turkey, we didn’t visit other parts of this ancient site. That’s, however, the downside of traveling during times like these. The uncertainty. The upside is that you can get sites like these all to yourself.
Have you been to Antalya? Did you visit Perge or Aspendos, or any other archeological sites? What was your experience?
Book Your Trip Like a PRO
1. Book Your Flight. Find cheap flights using Kiwi.com, Momondo.com. Or subscribe to Dollar Flight Club, if you don’t want to be searching for the flights yourself. Momondo usually is my first choice.
2. Book Your Accommodation. Booking.com, Agoda.com and Airbnb. I use Booking and Agoda at least a dozen times a year, and Airbnb – when looking for a long-term stay. My best tip is to ALWAYS compare the price. Sometimes the same hotel is cheaper on Booking.com, other times – on Agoda. Always compare the price!
3. Buy Your Travel Insurance. World Nomads and SafetyWings are two companies I can recommend. World Nomads offers some extra benefits, that will be important for those doing some higher risk activities, while SafetyWings is significantly cheaper. SafetyWings is only $9.25 / week.
