Do you want to go on a hike in Malta?
I did want to go on a walk in Malta, so I googled for Malta hiking trails. After realizing that there aren’t that many “real hikes in Malta”, unlike what you get for example in Mallorca, we just went. Somewhere. To, hopefully, walk from one beautiful place to another, and so we ended up walking from Dingli Cliffs to Xaqqa Cliffs, and to Blue Grotto.

1. Dingli Cliffs – Xaqqa Cliffs – Blue Grotto Hike: Basics
There is no one walking trail all the way to Blue Grotto.
It’s a mix of walking on trails, gravel roads, side of the road and, in our case, also taking a bus. We took a bus at the end to not walk on the side of the road any more.
MY ROUTE:
TIME & DISTANCE: around 6.3 miles / 10 km (around 2 hours).
That’s a walk from Dingli Cliffs to Xaqqa Cliffs, and then onwards to the nearest bus stop. Since the last part of the route means walking on the road, we took a bus instead and made it just in time for sunset at Blue Grotto.
TIPS: it’s rocky, as everywhere in Malta and Gozo. That’s walking in Malta for you. In many places there are fences to protect private property, and also many of the coastal roads are private (you aren’t allowed to walk there). At one point we asked a man if we could cross his field. Other option would be extra 30 minutes of walking on the road.
2. How to Get to Dingli Cliffs From Valleta?
There are many public buses on Malta.
In fact, bus seems to be the most popular mode of transportation in Malta. They run more or less everywhere, and everyone uses them.
We went to Mdina (a cute town), and from there to Dingli Cliffs.
Use Google Maps to find the right bus.
3. Dingli Cliffs – Xaqqa Cliffs – Blue Grotto Hike: Our Experience

Dingli Cliffs – Xaqqa Cliffs was okay.
You walk on a rocky ground or side of the road. So, nothing too special. The views, however, and the fact that you are outdoors, away from the busy traffic of Valleta, make it worth it. Speaking of traffic in and near Valleta, it’s crazy.
Climbing down to Xaqqa Cliffs, that was fun.
But it’s also not safe, and you shouldn’t do it if you are unsure of yourself. It’s easy to slip and fall there. Definitely don’t do it if you are hiking alone.
Sunset over the Blue Grotto – beautiful!
