When in Cesis, don’t miss the beautiful Erglu Cliffs!

Cesis is a beautiful, typical European medieval town, a popular day trip destination for everyone traveling to Riga. But there’s more to the area than the town itself. In fact, it’s very easy to spend at least a few days in the area.

If you enjoy being in nature, then this is for you.

The cliffs are only a 20-minute bicycle ride away from the town.

    1. Erglu Cliffs / Erglu Klintis: Basics

The cliffs are situated a 5-10 minute walk away from the nearest parking.

Hence, they are accessible for everyone.

If you don’t want to or you can’t do it, you don’t even have to walk down to the river bank. The view from above is also beautiful. For the best view, though, you’ll have to do it.

    LOCATION:

    DISTANCE & TIME: starting from 1 mile / 1.6 km (30 minutes).

    ENTRANCE: free.

TIPS: there are no shops and only one outdoor toilet near the trailhead. It is possible to spend a few hours here as well, as there are trails in all directions. So, if that might be your plan, come prepared and bring some water and snacks as well.

    2. How to Get to Erglu Sandstone Cliffs

It’s very easy to get to Erglu Cliffs. Just follow the map.

If you want the easiest way, take the Lencu street to leave Cesis, and you’ll get to the cliffs fastest way possible. Take into account that for around 2/3 of the way you’ll by on a gravel road. Another option? Just follow any road you like. As we did on the way back when following a road closer to river Gauja.

Once at the viewpoint, take the stairs on your right.

Walk down and go to the left, to the riverbank.

    3. Cycling to Erglu Cliffs: My Experience

For us it was a day trip from Riga to Cesis.

We arrived by train from Riga, taking our bicycles with us, and in total had a little bit more than 5 hours to explore the area. Our plan was to see a bit of the town and to spend a few hours in the nature. It was a warm and sunny autumn day, and we totally enjoyed our time.

As planned, we spent a bit of time in Cesis town itself.

We visited the Erglu Cliffs (Erglu klintis), and we went to Raiskums lake. On the way to the cliffs we took the Lencu street, and returned by following a road closer to river Gauja – which one exactly I’m not sure; as we just followed the navigation (set to walking mode), to go to Raiskuma lake right afterwards.

Here are a few photos from our day trip.
