    Our Best Langkawi Travel Tips

Langkawi is a wonderful tropical island located close to the Thai border.

It is known for its lush jungle, calm seas and pretty beaches with a backdrop of green hills. Apart from a couple of places, Langkawi is quiet and sleepy. It’s a perfect place for those who love peace and quiet, and nature. We’ve been to Langkawi multiple times, and have fallen in love with it. There are multiple daily flights from KL to Langkawi.

And you can even go on a day trip from Singapore to Langkawi. It’s very easy to travel to Langkawi.

Here are some of the things we have learned about this island.

Some of our best Langkawi tips.

    1. Langkawi can be reached by air or ferry. If you are traveling from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, we would recommend you to take the flight. It can cost as little as 15 euro (one way), and it takes around one hour. A bus and a ferry will take you a full day. If you fly, you can even do it as a day trip from Kuala Lumpur.
    2. There’s no public transport in Langkawi. If you want to explore different parts of the island, the best way is to do it by a rental car or scooter. In fact, scooters are the most popular mode of transport for tourists. Both car and scooter rental is cheap in Langkawi.
    3. Pantai Cenang is the best area for tourists. Kuah is a rather boring city. There are things that we like about it, like food availability, but apart from that, it’s surely not an area for tourists. Cenang has it all and even more.
    4. Street food is cheap, delicious and plentiful. If you want to try local street food, head to a night market. Night markets are held every day at a different location. Ask locals or hotel receptionist, to learn where the night market is happening today.
    5. Langkawi is very close to Thailand. You can easily combine a trip to Langkawi with a trip to Thailand. There are ferries departing to Ko Lipe (“the Maldives of Thailand”) and Satun (from Satun you travel to other parts of Thailand). Use this opportunity to get a glimpse of Thailand.
    6. Seven Wells Waterfalls is the best waterfall in Langkawi. Period. The only other worth visiting is Durian Perangin Waterfall, but only when there is water.
    7. Langkawi is a duty-free island. There are many duty-free shops around the island that sell tax-free alcohol, chocolates, cigarettes and other tobacco products. Most duty-free shops are located around Cenang Beach and Kuah, the main town of Langkawi. But keep in mind that there is a limit on how much alcohol you can buy, and you have to show your passport in order to do it.

Have you visited Langkawi? Did you do any day excursions in Langkawi? Which, in your opinion, are the best day trips from Langkawi you could recommend?

    1. Book Your Flight. Find cheap flights using Kiwi.com, Momondo.com. Or subscribe to Dollar Flight Club, if you don’t want to be searching for the flights yourself. Kiwi currently is my first choice.

    2. Book Your Accommodation. Booking.com, Agoda.com and Airbnb. I use Booking and Agoda at least a dozen times a year, and Airbnb – when looking for a long-term stay. My best tip is to ALWAYS compare the price. Sometimes the same hotel is cheaper on Booking.com, other times – on Agoda. Always compare the price!

    3. Buy Your Travel Insurance. Ekta and SafetyWings are two companies I can recommend. Ekta offers some extra benefits, that will be important for those doing some higher risk activities (make sure to choose the right plan!), while SafetyWings is better for digital nomads. SafetyWings is also very affordable.
