Are you looking for a beautiful viewpoint near Riga?

Do you want to see Riga from a different angle?

Then I urge you to check out the Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower. It’s an impressive wooden tower just a short ride away from the city center. You can get there in several ways. It’s super easy. You can take a taxi or drive. You can also take a public bus to the tower. You can cycle there.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also get there with a kayak.

More on this further below. I have done tried both cycling and kayaking.

1. Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower: Basics

It’s a fire lookout tower open for visitors.

The tower is 16 meters high, and because of safety measures only 5 people are allowed to climb it at the same time. Take this into account if you’ll be visiting it for sunset on a weekend, when there might be more people willing to do the same.

DISTANCE: the tower is some 6.5 miles / 10 km from the Riga Old Town.

If you’ll be cycling there, take into account the fact that there’s no cycling path. For about 1/5 of the ride you’ll be on a big road with quite heavy traffic. And the very last bit – some 5 minutes – you’ll be cycling on gravel.

ENTRANCE: free.

TIPS: for your own safety, don’t climb the tower if there are 5 or more people already. If you’re afraid of heights, you can go only half way up, or less. But then you’ll see only the forest.

2. Getting to the Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower

Even though the tower is on the outskirts of the city, getting there is easy.

It’s very easy, I would say.

You can drive or take a taxi (use Bolt app).

You can get to the Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower by public transportation:

  • a bus 36, going to Vakarbuļļi, stop “Bumbu kalniņš”;
  • a bus 56, going to Daugavgrīva, stop “Bumbu kalniņš.

From the bus stop you’ll have to walk on gravel for a couple of minutes.

And then there is a wooden path going to the tower.

All in all it’s a 5-minute walk.

You can cycle to the Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower.

Rent a bicycle in Riga. And just follow the map.

You can also kayak all the way to the tower.

Read all about my experience kayaking to the tower here.

Let’s just say, it’s harder than the rest of the options. And more fun, if you like these kind of things.

3. Bumbu Hill Firewatch Tower: My Experience

I have been to this place a couple of times.

The first time I went there by a kayak. You can learn all about in my kayaking in Riga article. Everything from where to rent a kayak to how to get to this and a few other interesting places in Riga. Getting to this spot isn’t easy, but it’s definitely doable.

The second time was now in August 2020. We rented bicycles in Riga, and cycled there.

It was a very cool experience.

Here are a few photos from the cycling – sunrise watching experience.
